According to Manning, “Her best gifts were cooking and showing love. Everything she prepared in the kitchen tasted different from everyone else’s cooking. The reason was that she incorporated love in every meal.” Juanita worked as a cook in Rosedale Middle School, Rosedale, Mississippi, for nearly 50 years. According to her family, every kid that ever walked into that cafeteria left with a hot breakfast and/or lunch prepared by her blessed hands. Children often dress eating at school, but that was not the case for 5 decades for her students beginning in the 1960s. She also served her home and community with the same love and commitment. Soul food, wrapped in southern hospitality was served daily to her family as well as anyone who walked into her home and the entire community. As a pillar of the “Fair Street Village” community, Juanita’s home was a haven for relatives, the broken, less fortunate, and troubled. After a hot meal and words of encouragement, they left her home empowered. Juanita was the epitome of Soul Food. She was in a class of her own when it came to preparing heartfelt, nourishing meals.
